This modern captivating and evocative sculpture from the Yoruba people of Nigeria depicts a loving and nurturing scene of a mother breastfeeding her infant while a young child playfully holds onto her legs. The intricate carving of the wood is both detailed and expressive, capturing the warmth and tenderness of the moment. The mother's figure is both strong and graceful, her posture suggesting a sense of calm and contentment. The baby is nestled securely against her chest, its tiny hands reaching out for her. The older child, full of curiosity and energy, adds a touch of dynamism to the scene. The woman is said to represent Odudua. She is an Earth Goddess and ancestral mother figure within Yoruba mythology. In either context the statue acts as a fertility symbol.
